GREETINGS:
Friday afternoon we came streaming into the hotel. There were shouts, hugs, kisses and joy reigned supreme. Lisa Porterfield had prepared name tags with pictures from the 1966 Directory but this was 46 years later. We no longer looked like our pictures. But we quickly identified each other.
The first order of the day was to register and have dinner together. David Powell, son of Roger and Avanelle, had set up a slide show in the conference room and that was exciting as we saw scenes of our early days together. I gave the welcome address at 7:00 PM then each person gave an update on themselves and family.
The next morning, Jeff Christian shared with us Theological Worlds that helped us see the different spiritual phases we have traveled through.
After this we divided into nine tables with a group leader at each table. Don Haymes led us to explore these questions, "Why did we come?, What did we learn?, How have we changed? And Would we do it again?" There were tape recorders on each table to record the comments. Group leaders then made a report of their table to the entire group.
We had lunch together and then went back to our groups.
We had three hours of free time.
And then dinner at 6:30 PM.
And we were entertained. Danny Mallow (Mr. Troll) who no doubt has a Nashville career waiting for him, Jo Lee Thayer and Methel Gale put together
an a cappella chorus for us, Marty Hooper sang and Richard Salmon and his daughter Julie entertained us.
My daughter Stephanie gave a reading from her new novel. Then Richard led us in group singing from Great Songs of the Church.
Sunday morning we met at 9:00 AM for a memorial service. Paula Link had prepared candles with names and as names of the deceased were read a family member or friend lighted a candle for them. Jesse Pettengill delivered an outstanding message.
We had communion and Don Haymes delivered a powerful message on John 11. He is the pulpit minister for the Fountain Square Church of Christ in
Indianapolis.
Jesse announced the 50th reunion next year at West Islip.
We hugged and kissed and said good bye.
John White took many pictures. He will send them to me and I will forward them to you.
God bless and be well,
Dwain
