Roger Powell Work History
August, 1998
When did you retire? JUNE 1992
How old were you? 60
What was your occupation?
First I was a quality control technician, in the power transistor division, for Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas for nearly 5 years.
I worked for Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, Long Island, N.Y. for seven years -- the first two years was as an electronics technician, and then I became an Guidance and Control Engineer and then a Spacecraft Test Conductor in Bethpage and then spent from July 1967 to July 1969 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Grumman Aerospace was prime contractor for the Lunar Module for NASA. From July 1969 to July 1970 I was a Spacecraft Test Conductor in Bethpage for Lunar Modules 9, 10, and 11 at which point I resigned and moved to Canyon, Texas to complete a BS degree. My whole family was in school at the same time. Avanelle completed her first two years of college there also.
I went to work for Martin Marietta in St. Louis at McDonnell on the Skylab project on May 15, 1972. We then moved to Littleton, CO in August 1973. I worked on the Viking Lander that landed on Mars and took scientific data for several years. Other projects included, Magellan (it mapped the Planet Venus) and a space-based laser communication device for a classified project, Peacekeeper (MX) and Small Missile Proposals. My last job was working on a proposal for “Brilliant Eyes”, a component of President Reagan’s “Star Wars”. I also worked for 7 months in the safety department.
I taught Mathematics at Columbine High School for 5 straight semesters when it was an all year round school. I also tutored at Arapahoe Community College .
I taught Mathematics and Physics at Jim Elliot junior and senior high school in Denver for two years (1993-1995).
I was a distributor for Equinox International and then Trek Alliance from March 1997 until August 1998.
In March of 1998 I quit doing any work outside my home and have been enjoying grandchildren and working on several projects. I have inventoried my books (over 400), and am in the process of inventoring a collection of 166 CD’s which are now in a SONY “Juke box” that holds a total of 200 CD’s Titles will be entered in the player itself and all information will be tabulated on a spreadsheet (I have completed this for about 30 CD’s so far).
I am scanning and editing a book on the Powell Family, a history written by John Shirk in 1918. I have completed about 60 pages of 200+ pages. I hope to obtain permission to reprint the book. If not it may be a unauthorized printing. [Google Books published this book here.] I also hope to enter the Hogsett history as originally compiled by Zitella Jean Hogsett.
So, one can see I am not idle. I enjoy Bible and NT Greek study, games that are computer based also.
