Dear Friends and Family,
It's time to give you all an update on my continued progress. It is now 1 month (on the 17th) out from surgery. I now only use my collar when I am in the car. I walk around the house using nothing. I am using my cane when I'm out, but it is rather slow going.
My pain varies from day to day. The "cinching" I have talked about for 3 years is definitely a factor. This is like a vice around my torso. You may know that I am on a 3-day pattern - one day VERY tight, the next day medium, and the next day light or none. The tight day has been extra tight, making it very hard to do anything else on that day.
I started physical and occupational therapy last week. It is hard work, but I know how much I need it. I had not been formally assessed since August, 2001 and talking about, demonstrating, and seeing my physical deficits on paper is a reality check. I will continue therapy twice a week for several weeks.
I have appointments with both Dr. Vollmer (his last as he leaves UTHC) and Dr. Barber on 1/31. If they agree, I plan to return to work at least part time the first week of February.
What a blessing this morning was! First, I showered and got ready by myself for the first time since coming home from the hospital. John's sermon was on "Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus". Now, that could mean either correcting our focus so that it is on Jesus rather than on worldly things or ideas, or fixing our eyes on Jesus to direct the paths where life takes us (Heb. 3:1). He shared our story about my hospital roommate to illustrate the lesson. We are both so amazed and encouraged to be used by the Lord in such a powerful way. We closed the service with "The Joy of the Lord", which is on my CD - God orchestrated that one because neither John nor Eli, our worship leader, knew that it was. If you would like a copy of the sermon, please let me know (tape or CD).
May the JOY of the LORD be your strength, too!
