Today was a special day at therapy and I want to share it with you.
I did the "community walk" with my walker. This included walking through the waiting room to the elevator and riding down to the first floor standing up. I had to manage the handicapped door out to the front drop-off area. My therapist wants Russell to drop me off there, walk me up to therapy, and leave my chair in the car! I practiced turning around and sitting down on the seat on my walker as if I was waiting for someone to pick me up. I said I needed to work on ramps or steps because all I had walked on were flat surfaces. My therapist said there was one we could use up on the sixth floor in the gym. We proceeded to make the long walk to the D elevator.
I may not have told you that I was up on six last Friday when I picked up the prescription for my walker from Nicole. At that time, I saw nurses Karen and Tom, as well as aides Tracy and Ray-Ray. I stood up and talked to them at the nurses station. I was glad I had just done that or today would have been even more tramatic. It is very emotional to be up there again for any reason.
We proceeded from the elevator all the way down the hall, past the nurses station, to the gym. Bev and Celeste were there and came to greet me and give me a big hug. It was really incredible for them to see me walking on my walker. I got to tell them in person about my experience on the floor on the mat last week. Bev said, "yes, you really hated us that day we tried it up here." Celeste wanted to know how the bathroom was coming, and I was thrilled to be able to tell her, "I can do it myself!" I also saw charge nurse Helga who said she wished that they had videoed me so the patients could see that you can get better. And yes, we did try the ramp and I did fine, and with more practice I'm sure I'll do even better. Praise God!!
By the way, I did get an appointment with Dr. Barber - next Tuesday at 1 PM. We may be transitioning to Dr. Able, but at least we will get to do it together.
Love, Lynne
