The first week in August, my family and I were able to take off and go to Lubbock - our first out-of-town trip since last Thanksgiving. It was quite an adventure! We left on Thursday for the 425 mile trip. I wasn't sure how well I would handle riding in the car that long, but it went rather well, although I was very tired when we got there. I think one of the most difficult things was that some of the places we stopped were not very well handicap equipped. I was surprised at how many doors were too narrow and how many ramps were non-existent. I will probably become an ADA compliance advocate through all of this.
We stayed with Russell's parents, Ben and Anita Riggan. They were so glad to see me! Anita had come to San Antonio with Teresa in January while I was in the hospital. Ben had heard the stories, but had not been able to see for himself. Even at their house, my mobilizer would not fit through the bathroom door. I'm glad I wasn't in my wheelchair!
Friday afternoon, Teresa took me up to Compu-Share, where David has worked for 22 years. He and his co-workers have been praying for me continuously since my accident and look forward to my updates. Each person I saw, all David said was "this is Lynne!" - and they all marveled at how awesome God is and how prayers are obviously answered - I am a walking testimony to that. We enjoyed visiting, testifying, and when I took a few steps over to David without my mobilizer - even crying together. What a great experience for all of us!
Ben was hungry for fish, and had been seeing a commercial for a Friday night fish fry in Anton, which is twenty miles or so outside of Lubbock. So.......... We loaded up two cars full of people and took him out there. He rarely gets out-of-town anymore because of his health, so this was really a treat (and the fish was good, too.)
Saturday, the boys and I spent most of the day with David and his kids, while Russell and his dad grilled chickens and sausage (a favorite pastime). The cousins really enjoy being together. David, Teresa and I enjoyed having a chance to visit together since they had each been to San Antonio separately on several occasions. We also played Scrabble - one of our favorite pastimes. Teresa even beat both of us and she was very proud of that!
On Sunday, we first went to worship at Sunset with Ben and Anita. We saw many friends who had been praying for us faithfully. We sang "Father Hear the Prayer We Offer" - a hymn that was sung at our wedding. The first verse says "Father hear the prayer we offer, nor for ease that prayer shall be, but for strength that we may ever live our lives courageously." It struck me that in 16 years of marriage - this week - that pledge had not been tested as much as it had in the last 7 1/2 months. And, with God at our side, we are better because of it. That's Grace.
We left a few minutes early so that we could get over to Vandelia, where David worships. He and Teresa were waiting for us when we got there. Toward the end of the service, David waved to the preacher, obviously having forewarned him that I would be there. They too, had been in constant prayer with me and my family since they first heard about my accident on Sunday, Dec. 26th. David walked with me down the center aisle to the front of the church, and then handed me the microphone, not giving me a chance to prepare nor to object. The Spirit gave me the words to thank them for standing with us in prayer before our faithful Father, to marvel at how awesome God is, and to realize how God uses us for His glory. Quite a wonderful blessing for me, and a faith builder to all of those who had been faithfully praying.
That evening, we went to worship at Monterey with Teresa, where she worships. Yes, I have also been on their prayer list all of this time, and many also receive the updates from Teresa. Again, we saw many who had been praying and now marveled at answered prayer. One of the sweetest stories was of Audry, who was in Teresa's fifth grade classroom last year at school. You see, she has CP so she knows what coping is all about. When she saw me her eyes went wide and full of tears when she said, "Mrs. Reed! You said she couldn't walk!" Teresa replied, "she couldn't then - but she can now." She too had been praying for me faithfully.
We returned to San Antonio on Monday, tired, but so very grateful for the opportunity to see so many and encourage each other. For those of you who live in Lubbock that we didn't get to see this trip, hopefully we'll be able to go again before the next seven months are up and will be able to catch up with you then. Until then, NEVER underestimate the power of prayer – and keep it up because God is not through working through this to His glory yet.
Love, Lynne
